The Caloosahatchee—like the St. Lucie—suffers from Lake Okeechobee discharges. This is an important estuary for fishing, boating and other water-based tourism. However, when the discharges occur, local economies suffer. This past year, toxic blue-green algae from the lake and red tide from the Gulf of Mexico converged in this area, resulting in regional economic harm.
