The Indian River Lagoon is one of the most diverse estuaries in terms of the species it supports.  It is long and narrow, spanning a distance of about 150 miles of Florida’s east coast and about 0.5 miles wide.  It is known for its clear water and pristine sandy bottom, supporting seagrass.  The Southern end has been impacted by Lake Okeechobee discharges as described above for the St. Lucie Estuary.  Because it is relatively cutoff from the Atlantic Ocean, it is highly vulnerable to nutrient pollution.
